Michigan Attorney General Releases Flint Water Crisis Report

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel released a comprehensive report on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, detailing a yearslong criminal investigation into the Flint water crisis. The document outlines the evidence and prosecutorial strategies that led to 42 criminal charges against nine government officials, though it contains redactions required by Michigan law regarding one-person grand juries.

All criminal charges were dismissed following a Michigan Supreme Court ruling in People v. Peeler, which invalidated the one-person grand jury process. The Attorney General's Office stated this ruling reversed nearly a century of legal precedent. Because of this decision, no defendants were convicted, and the office noted that all individuals named in the report are presumed innocent.

During a news conference, Nessel stated that "Justice has evaded the people of Flint" because the evidence will not be scoured in a criminal court. While criminal prosecutions failed, Nessel noted that a $626.25 million civil settlement, approved in 2021 by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, continues to provide restitution to those impacted.
