Trump Administration Launches 90-Day Beef Import Deal
The Trump administration implemented a tax-exempt beef import deal to lower consumer prices, sparking backlash from Texas ranchers facing extreme weather and rising costs.
The Trump administration launched a 90-day beef import deal on September 1 designed to lower consumer prices and provide American ranchers the financial breathing room to expand their herds. Under the terms of the agreement, 100,000 tons of imported ground beef per month will be tax-exempt and purchased at 25% below market value.
While the White House frames the initiative as a supportive measure for long-term domestic growth, Texas ranchers argue the deal undercuts domestic products by incentivizing shoppers to buy cheaper foreign meat. These producers are currently struggling with extreme heat, drought, and infestations that have limited hay production.
Domestic producers are also facing rising costs for fuel, feed, and equipment. Despite these local challenges, the United States Department of Agriculture projects that total U.S. beef production will exceed 11 million tons in 2026.
