PlayStation Fans Organize Blackout Over Sony Disc Production Ban

The game preservation and consumer rights group Does It Play? organized a week-long economic and gameplay blackout targeting Sony Interactive Entertainment from August 23 to August 30, 2026. The campaign calls for users to completely disengage from the PlayStation ecosystem, including logging out of PlayStation Network, turning off consoles, and halting all PlayStation Store purchases. Participants are urged to start the blackout at 7:00 PM local time on August 23.

The protest follows an announcement by Sony Interactive Entertainment that it will stop producing physical game discs for all new titles by 2028. Sid Shuman, Senior Director at SIE Content Communications, stated that new games will be available exclusively through the PlayStation Store and retailers in digital formats. Organizers describe the move as the last straw in a pattern of corporate mismanagement, citing the closure of Japan Studio and Bluepoint, a failed live-service strategy, and the neglect of the PS VR2.

A supporting petition titled Don't Kill The Disc has garnered over 345,000 signatures, and the Stop Killing Games campaign has backed the effort. The blackout aims to lower active player statistics to pressure the company, although analysts suggest the financial impact may be minimal due to Sony's large user base and the existing industry shift toward digital sales.
