PML-N Wins Majority in Azad Jammu and Kashmir Elections

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) emerged as the dominant party in the 2026 Azad Jammu and Kashmir general elections, securing 25 seats in the Legislative Assembly. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) followed as the second-largest party, winning 12 seats.

The election process concluded its three-phase cycle on August 15 following postponed balloting in the Bagh district. Original elections scheduled for August 10 were delayed after polling staff failed to arrive amid local tensions. Repolling at 23 stations resulted in a split for the two major parties: PML-N candidate Sardar Mir Akbar Khan won the LA-16 Eastern Bagh seat with 20,793 votes, while PPP candidate Sardar Zia Qamar won the LA-15 Central Bagh seat with 17,019 votes.

While the PML-N holds a clear advantage to form the government, the final parliamentary strength of the administration and opposition remains unsettled. By-elections are still pending in seven constituencies across Rawalakot and Sudhanoti.
