EU Scaleup Europe Fund Invests €300 Million in Iceye

The Scaleup Europe Fund invested €300 million in Finnish satellite company Iceye Oj as part of a €1 billion funding round.

The Scaleup Europe Fund, a €5 billion initiative by the European Union, made its first investment by contributing €300 million to Finnish satellite company Iceye Oj. The investment was part of a June funding round co-led by the US-based General Atlantic, which raised a total of €1 billion and valued the surveillance technology firm at more than €10 billion.

Managed by Swedish investment firm EQT AB, the fund's move aligns with a broader EU strategy to develop domestic space-based intelligence and communications. This effort seeks to reduce reliance on American technology, a priority intensified by conflicts in the Middle East and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Iceye CEO Rafał Modrzewski stated that the company intends to list on a European exchange in the future. Victor Englesson, a partner at EQT and co-head of the Scaleup Europe Fund, noted the strategic flexibility afforded by the company's current position.
