India Internet Subscribers Reach 1.09 Billion in 2026
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India reports internet subscribers grew to 1.09 billion with wireless data usage surging by 24.74 percent.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India reported that the nation's internet subscriber base grew to 1.09 billion by the end of the 2026 financial year, a 12.76 percent annual increase from 969.1 million. Broadband users made up the majority of this growth, totaling 1.07 billion subscribers.
Wireless data usage surged 24.74 percent, rising from 228,779 petabytes in the 2024-25 period to 285,376 petabytes in 2025-26. This growth pushed average monthly consumption per subscriber to 25.51 GB. Total wireless data service revenue grew 11.53 percent to approximately Rs 2.39 lakh crore, though revenue realization per gigabyte fell 10.59 percent, dropping from Rs 8.97 to Rs 8.02.
Overall telephone subscriptions reached 1.33 billion, bringing national tele-density to 93.26 percent. This expansion was most prominent in urban markets, where tele-density hit 151.47 percent. Total telecom gross revenue for the period rose 8.59 percent to Rs 4,04,067 crore, while the average revenue per user for wireless services increased to Rs 180.73 per month.
