Mississippi Federal Judge Rules Tower Dump Warrants Unconstitutional

A federal judge in Mississippi ruled on Wednesday that tower dump warrants are unconstitutional, upholding a lower court's decision to deny government requests for mobile device data. The ruling centers on law enforcement efforts to obtain time and location data for every mobile device connected to specific cell towers during designated windows.

Judge Carlton Reeves issued the decision in the context of gang-related crime investigations in the Jackson area. He determined that these warrants violate the Fourth Amendment because they require searching the records of numerous innocent people to identify a small number of suspects.

Reeves characterized the practice as the modern equivalent of prohibited general warrants, concluding that the broad nature of the data collection exceeds constitutional limits on search and seizure.
