Muhammad Bello Goronyo Resigns PDP to Join ADC Campaign

Muhammad Bello Goronyo resigned as Sokoto State PDP chairman to become Director-General of the African Democratic Congress campaign for governorship candidate Manir Muhammad Dan Iya.

The chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State, Muhammad Bello Goronyo, resigned from the party effective August 31, 2026. In a resignation letter, Goronyo stated his decision was based on purely personal reasons. He had previously served as a factional chairman under the Tanimu Turaki-led camp during a period of leadership instability within the state party.

Immediately following his departure, ADC governorship candidate Manir Muhammad Dan Iya appointed Goronyo as the Director-General of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Campaign Council for the 2027 election. Dan Iya cited Goronyo's experience as a former commissioner and seasoned politician as essential for uniting party structures and strengthening grassroots mobilization across Sokoto's 23 Local Government Areas.

Hayatu Tafida Aminu, the current PDP state chairman, criticized the defection, claiming Goronyo had acted as a de facto member of the ADC for approximately nine months while still presenting himself as the PDP chairman. Aminu dismissed claims of leadership disputes and court judgments, asserting that his leadership is the only recognized authority in the state. Despite the friction, Aminu stated the PDP does not intend to take legal action against Goronyo and that the move will not hinder the party's 2027 preparations.
