India Launches Voter Roll Revision in Karnataka State

The Election Commission of India launched a Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Karnataka to update voter data through door-to-door verification. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar initiated the exercise on June 30, 2026, by filling out an enumeration form and urging eligible citizens to participate to safeguard their voting rights and access government benefits.

By July 1, 2026, Booth Level Officers distributed 5,468,607 enumeration forms, covering approximately 9.87% of the state's 55,432,314 registered electors. Preliminary data from the field identified 1,383 deceased electors and 816 individuals who had permanently shifted. The process utilizes both physical forms and digital submissions, with Raichur leading in digitization efforts. To manage the fieldwork, the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms activated a digital attendance feature via the Kartavya mobile application for officials on duty.

While some observers described the process as straightforward, BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai called for an impartial revision. Bommai urged the Election Commission to ensure transparency, citing reports that officials were acting under pressure from the Congress party and the Karnataka government. The revision process continues until July 29, with the draft electoral roll scheduled for publication on August 5 and the final roll on October 7.
