Tesla Discontinues Solar Roof Tiles to Focus on Panels

Tesla has discontinued the sale of its premium solar roof tiles, removing the product from its website and notifying certified installers that supplies will cease. The move ends a product line launched in 2016 that struggled to meet the ambitious goals of CEO Elon Musk, who had originally targeted 1,000 installations per week.

Industry data from Wood Mackenzie indicates the product failed to gain significant traction, with only approximately 3,000 systems installed over the product's lifespan. The discontinuation follows a period of financial and legal instability, including a 2023 class-action lawsuit settlement where the company paid $6 million over claims of inflated costs.

Tesla is now shifting its residential solar strategy toward traditional solar panels manufactured at its factory in Buffalo, New York. While exiting the roof tile market, the company continues to invest in broader energy infrastructure, recently filing plans for a $10.1 billion solar-cell factory near Houston, Texas.
