Israel Conducts Syria Incursions During US-Mediated Peace Talks
Israeli military forces conducted raids and detentions in southwestern Syria while officials from the Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham regime negotiated a security framework in Paris.
The Israeli military conducted multiple incursions into the Quneitra countryside in southwestern Syria on January 6 and 8, 2026. Troops established a checkpoint at the al-Kasarat junction between Jbata al-Khashab and Ain al-Bayda, where they detained four young men from Jbata. Additional operations included raids on the villages of Bariqa and Kudna, the entry of a 12-vehicle convoy into Saida al-Golan, and the raising of an Israeli flag over Tal al-Ahmar al-Sharqi.
These military actions coincided with US-mediated negotiations in Paris between Israeli officials and a delegation from the Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham regime. The Syrian delegation was led by Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani and Intelligence Director General Hussein al-Salama.
The talks aim to establish a security framework and revive the 1974 Disengagement Agreement. These diplomatic efforts follow Israel's seizure of the demilitarized buffer zone after the Bashar al-Assad regime fell in late 2024.
