Wiltshire Council Manages New Housing Developments and Local Plan
Wiltshire Council is overseeing a new 24-home build in Sutton Benger and a proposed 410-home project in Royal Wootton Bassett.
Construction has begun on a 24-home development in Sutton Benger after Wiltshire Council initially refused the plans in 2021. The developer, E G Carter, started work on September 30 following a successful appeal and is currently seeking permission for minor changes to the site's access arrangements.
In Royal Wootton Bassett, the council's Strategic Planning Committee approved an outline application in July 2025 for up to 410 homes at Woodshaw, submitted by David Wilson Homes. The project is awaiting a formal decision notice and the completion of a Section 106 legal agreement. The development faces opposition from Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council and local residents who cite concerns over traffic congestion.
These projects occur as the council develops a new Local Plan. The site submission period for the plan closed on September 30. Nic Thomas, the director of planning, economy and climate for the council, stated that "it is too early to say which sites will be allocated for development" in the updated plan.
