Brazil Initiates Retaliation Process Against U.S. Trade Tariffs

The Government of Brazil initiated a reciprocity process on August 13 to determine retaliatory measures against the United States. This action follows the imposition of U.S. tariffs on Brazilian goods, including a 25% tariff based on claims of unfair trade practices and a 12.5% tariff linked to allegations that Brazil has failed to enforce forced labor bans.

As a preliminary step, Brazil has requested diplomatic consultations with U.S. trade authorities. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva indicated that the administration may invoke the Reciprocity Law, which grants the government authority to implement measures beyond standard import tariffs.

Potential retaliatory actions currently under review include the suspension of pharmaceutical and agricultural patents, as well as the imposition of restrictions on U.S. audiovisual companies.
