India's automotive sector recorded strong August growth, led by a 21.3% increase in Maruti Suzuki wholesales and significant gains for Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra.
India's automotive market experienced strong wholesale volume growth in August 2026 across multiple segments. Passenger vehicle volumes grew in the mid-30 percent range, with total industry wholesales estimated at approximately 4.5 lakh units. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd led the market with 219,220 units, a 21.3% year-on-year increase driven by a 34.3% jump in domestic sales, though exports declined by 7%.
Other major manufacturers reported significant gains. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd saw a 56% increase in total wholesales to 67,753 units, while Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd reported a 42% increase in overall auto sales to 107,648 units. Kia India recorded a 48.1% rise in dispatches to 29,042 units, and JSW MG Motor India reported a 14% increase to 7,508 units.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd grew by 8.8% to 65,796 units, though the company noted that logistical constraints from the conflict in West Asia hindered its exports. Beyond passenger vehicles, commercial vehicle volumes rose in the mid-20 percent range, supported by infrastructure activity and GST rate rationalization. Two-wheeler volumes grew by approximately 15%, led by TVS Motor Company, while tractor volumes saw a modest 4% increase due to a weaker monsoon and a high previous-year base.
