Iran Shoots Down US Drone and Targets Thai Vessel
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps shot down a US reconnaissance drone and targeted a Thai-flagged vessel amid escalating naval tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps shot down an AeroVironment RQ-11 Raven reconnaissance drone in the Ramshir region of Khuzestan province on July 17, 2026. The IRGC stated the lightweight tactical drone was destroyed by light fire from an advanced air defense system. The U.S. military has not yet commented on the incident.
On the same day, the IRGC Navy targeted a Thai-flagged vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials reported that the ship ignored warnings and attempted to transit the waterway without authorization. While the vessel was prevented from passing, no details regarding casualties or damage were released.
These actions occur during a period of escalating hostilities. The U.S. military recently struck bridges and infrastructure in Hormozgan province and instituted a blockade of Iranian ports. In response, Iranian forces launched reprisal attacks and declared the Strait of Hormuz closed. The current volatility follows a joint U.S.-Israel offensive against Iran in February and subsequent retaliatory strikes by Tehran. Both nations signed a Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding last month to terminate the war, but military exchanges in the region persist.
