India Approves Ten Semiconductor Units With Rs 1.6 Lakh Crore Investment

The Government of India has approved ten semiconductor units, including silicon and silicon carbide fabs and packaging facilities, attracting investments totaling Rs 1.6 lakh crore. Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada informed the Rajya Sabha that these efforts are part of the Semicon India Programme to establish a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem.

This expansion is supported by Production-Linked Incentive schemes for electronics and IT hardware, which have contributed to a sixfold increase in manufacturing output since 2014-15. To address design needs, the Design Linked Incentive Scheme has supported 23 companies in developing chip and System-on-Chip designs for the telecom and AI sectors.

To build a talent pipeline, the government launched the Chips to Startup Programme and provided EDA design tools to 94 startups. Additionally, the India Semiconductor Mission partnered with Lam Research to train 60,000 professionals in nanofabrication and process engineering, while the All India Council for Technical Education introduced new degrees and diplomas in VLSI Design and IC Manufacturing.
