Uber Launches Live Video Streaming for Teen Rides

Uber Technologies Inc. is testing a safety feature allowing guardians to view live video streams of their teenagers' rides via the driver's phone camera.

Uber Technologies Inc. is introducing a safety feature that allows parents or guardians to view a live video stream of their teenager's ride. The system utilizes the driver's phone selfie camera to provide a view of the back seat, though the stream is optional and requires the driver to enable it. Both the driver and the teenager receive notifications when a guardian is watching the livestream.

To ensure quality, the company recommends that drivers position their phones for a clear view of the passengers, though the stream automatically pauses if connection stability or device performance drops. Uber stated that the footage is not accessible to any party after the trip ends.

The feature is currently being tested in nine U.S. markets, including Atlanta, Phoenix, and Orlando, with a nationwide rollout planned for the coming weeks. This tool complements existing safety measures for teen riders, which include pin verification, real-time map tracking, and optional audio recording.
