UK and New Zealand Face Rising Inflation and Rate Hikes

The United Kingdom and New Zealand are seeing divergent inflation trends that are driving market expectations for multiple interest rate hikes before year-end.

Inflation data from the United Kingdom and New Zealand reveal divergent trends but shared pressures on interest rates. In the UK, inflation rose from 3.1% to 3.5% between August and September, a shift driven largely by petrol prices. This increase has led financial markets to anticipate two interest rate hikes before the end of the year, which is creating upward pressure on mortgage rates and dampening property demand.

In New Zealand, the annual inflation rate eased to 3.7% from 4.1% in June, supported by a temporary dip in fuel prices. However, a recent resurgence in global fuel costs is expected to push inflation back above 4% by the end of the year. Consequently, markets are betting on a 25 basis point rate hike by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand on October 28, with a further increase possible in December.

New Zealand Finance Minister Nicola Willis characterized the recent inflation figures as encouraging, though she attributed current energy costs to previous government policies. She stated that the government is focused on the underlying drivers of household budgets by keeping inflation under control.
