AI Firms Call for Federal Oversight of Frontier Models
Anthropic and OpenAI executives are urging the U.S. government to establish a centralized regulatory agency and third-party testing to mitigate risks from frontier artificial intelligence.
Anthropic and OpenAI executives are calling for increased U.S. government oversight of frontier artificial intelligence to prevent risks including critical infrastructure breaches and the design of biological weapons. The push for formal regulation comes as the United States and China compete to achieve Artificial General Intelligence.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei specifically recommended that the federal government implement third-party testing of frontier models before they are released to the public. While the European Union and certain U.S. states have created regulatory frameworks, the U.S. federal government has primarily relied on executive discretion to manage the technology.
Critics of the current approach argue that a centralized federal regulatory agency is required to establish clear performance standards. Such an agency, equipped with dedicated staffing and financial resources, would also facilitate international agreements with China to pace the development of AI.
