Google Launches Home MCP for Third-Party AI Agent Control

Google launched Home MCP, an integration that allows third-party AI agents to access and control connected devices within the Google Home ecosystem. Utilizing the Model Context Protocol (MCP) standard originally developed by Anthropic, the system enables agents such as Claude, Hermes, and Open Claw to analyze home data, monitor event history, and create custom dashboards.

Available to Google Home Premium Advanced subscribers in the United States for a $20 monthly fee, the integration allows agents to summarize camera feeds and adjust thermostats through natural language. While Gemini remains the primary interface for Nest speakers and the app, users can now route complex automation to preferred third-party agents. Setup requires a Google Cloud project and OAuth configuration.

To mitigate security risks, Google implemented hardcoded safety protections that block third-party agents from performing high-risk actions, such as unlocking doors or disarming security alarms. This strategic shift moves Google toward becoming an infrastructure layer for smart homes, decoupling the physical ecosystem from the intelligence layer. Security researchers have expressed concern regarding granting large language models write access to physical home infrastructure.
