Pakistan Current Account Deficit Surges to $356 Million
The State Bank of Pakistan reported a September current account deficit of $356 million, driven by imports outpacing export growth.
The State Bank of Pakistan reported that the country's current account deficit rose to $356 million in September, a 388 percent increase from the $73 million deficit recorded in August. This figure represents a sharp reversal from the $133 million surplus recorded in September of the previous year.
The widening deficit resulted from imports rising 23 percent year-on-year to $7.38 billion, which outpaced a 15 percent increase in exports that reached $3.95 billion. During the same period, workers' remittances grew by nearly 13 percent to $3.59 billion.
For the first quarter of the 2026-27 fiscal year, the cumulative current account deficit reached $874 million. This marks a nearly 16 percent increase compared to the $755 million deficit recorded during the same period in the previous fiscal year.
