Wisconsin Issues Voting Guidance for August 11 Partisan Primary

The Wisconsin Elections Commission and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles issued critical guidance on August 4 regarding the August 11 partisan primary. Officials warned voters against mailing completed absentee ballots, citing slow mail service and postmarking delays that could prevent ballots from being counted. Instead, they recommended delivering ballots to local clerk offices, approved dropboxes, or designated polling and central count locations on election day.

To ensure eligibility at the polls, the Division of Motor Vehicles clarified that while Wisconsin law requires a photo ID, a federally compliant REAL ID is not mandatory for voting. The state does not issue a specific voter ID. U.S. citizens applying for their first ID must provide birth certificates and proof of residency at DMV customer service centers. For those unable to receive a physical card before the election, the DMV provides a free receipt that serves as valid identification for voting.

Officials reminded the public that the August 11 election is a partisan primary, meaning voters must declare a party affiliation for their votes to be counted. Same-day registration remains available at polling locations on election day.
