UK and Nigeria Renew Security Pact to Combat Hybrid Threats

Nigeria and the United Kingdom renewed their security and defence partnership in Abuja to coordinate against terrorism, cyber threats, and disinformation.

National Security Advisers Nuhu Ribadu of Nigeria and Jonathan Powell of the United Kingdom co-chaired the fourth UK-Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership Dialogue in Abuja. The two nations renewed a strategic framework established in 2022 to address transnational threats, specifically targeting terrorism financing, organized crime, and AI-enabled cyber threats.

Both governments committed to a whole-of-government approach that integrates military action with diplomatic and financial tools. The partnership focuses on protecting democratic institutions from disinformation and stabilizing West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea. Operational cooperation includes British military personnel supporting Nigerian forces in Maiduguri and UK specialists assisting the National Counter Terrorism Centre.

The dialogue included high-level Nigerian officials, such as Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Defence Staff General Olufemi Oluyede, and Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu. Key outcomes include enhanced intelligence sharing and the implementation of frameworks via the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit to disrupt the financial networks of terrorist organizations.
