Global and Local Chains Expand China Burger Market

International restaurant chains and domestic brands are aggressively expanding burger operations in China to target budget-conscious diners and single-person households.

Yum China is leading a surge of expansion in the Chinese burger market, scaling its Pizza Hut Burger Bar format with a goal of 500-600 outlets by the end of 2026. This growth is driven by a rise in one-person households and a shift toward lower-cost, portable meals among budget-conscious consumers.

Domestic operators are diversifying into the segment, including hotpot chain Haidilao, which recently launched the Huanxianbao brand, and coffee chain M Stand. International brands are also increasing their footprint; Five Guys opened stores in Beijing in August 2026, and Wendy's announced plans in May to open up to 1,000 franchised restaurants over the next decade.

The burger category was valued at $18.4 billion in 2025. Market projections indicate an annual growth rate of 8.7% through 2035 as these diverse players compete for market share.
