Japan Vice Finance Minister Defends GPIF Global Market Role

Atsushi Mimura stated that Japan's Government Pension Investment Fund supports global financial market liquidity following record quarterly investment gains.

Japan's Vice Finance Minister for International Affairs, Atsushi Mimura, stated that the Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) supports the function and liquidity of global financial markets. Speaking at a panel on demographics and ageing populations during IMF meetings in Bangkok, Mimura attributed the growth of the GPIF to early policy interventions established in 1961, specifically the introduction of universal pensions and healthcare systems.

Mimura noted that these proactive measures allowed Japan to manage a rapidly ageing population while facilitating a massive accumulation of pension funds. He claimed that the early introduction of these policies provided positive by-products beyond simply responding to demographic shifts.

The comments come as the GPIF, currently the world's largest institutional investor, reported record quarterly investment gains for the April-June quarter. This financial performance has led to increased scrutiny over whether the fund will adjust its investment strategy, a potential shift that could significantly impact global financial markets.
