Nigel Farage Regains Clacton Seat Amid Donation Probe
Nigel Farage won a special election in Clacton-on-Sea with 63% of the vote, though a parliamentary investigation into undeclared donations continues.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage regained his parliamentary seat in a special election in Clacton-on-Sea on August 17, 2026. Farage won 63% of the vote, finishing ahead of comedian Count Binface, who secured approximately 27%. Mainstream political parties boycotted the contest, characterizing the election as a farce.
Farage had resigned his seat in July to trigger the election after a parliamentary watchdog began investigating an undeclared 5 million pound gift from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne and financial ties to George Cottrell. While Farage framed the result as a victory of the people against the establishment, the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards resumed its probe hours after the result was announced. Farage maintains the 5 million pound sum was a personal gift not subject to registration.
Labour Party chairwoman Bridget Phillipson dismissed the win as a distraction from a mountain of sleaze and scandal. A poll by the think tank More in Common found that 49% of Britons believe Farage should face a second by-election if the probe finds he broke donation rules. If the commissioner recommends a suspension exceeding 10 days, another by-election could be triggered.
