Student Leader Mahato Continues Hunger Strike Over Jharkhand Exam Fraud

Student leader Devendra Nath Mahato and five members of the JPSC, JSSC Reforms Manch are conducting an indefinite hunger strike at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium in Ranchi. The protest, part of a broader satyagraha that began July 25, centers on alleged irregularities in recruitment exams conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). Protesters specifically demand the cancellation of the 14th JPSC Combined Civil Services Preliminary Examination, a CBI or independent judicial investigation into malpractice, the release of OMR sheets, and systemic agency reforms.

On August 5, activist Sonam Wangchuk intervened to urge Mahato to drink water and consume salt due to dropping blood sugar and pressure levels. Mahato agreed to take water and salt but maintained his refusal to consume food until the government meets their demands.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren stated that the government is sensitive to the issue and will announce decisions at an appropriate time. Meanwhile, the state Criminal Investigation Department has arrested 14 people and questioned former JPSC chairman L Khiangte. The opposition, led by Babulal Marandi and the BJP, has called for the immediate cancellation of the exam and a formal CBI probe.
