U.S. Authorities Arrest Father of Deployed Sailor in Key West

The Department of Homeland Security arrested Luis Manuel Aviles, a Nicaraguan national and handyman, in Key West, Florida. Aviles has lived in the United States for 19 years and holds a work permit, but authorities are holding him in ICE custody pending deportation as part of the Trump administration's mass deportation agenda.

Aviles is the father of Joshua Aviles, a sailor currently deployed in the Middle East aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. The arrest follows an Associated Press investigation revealing that at least six family members of active-duty troops have been deported amid a rollback of immigration protections for military families. The Department of Homeland Security stated that having a family member in the military is not a "free pass to violate our nation’s laws."

Separately, the USS Abraham Lincoln has set a military record for uninterrupted time at sea. This deployment has led to reports of food shortages and deteriorating mental health among the crew. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth dismissed these reports, stating they were "completely misrepresented."
