U.S. Uses Project Maven AI in Iran Strikes

The United States Department of Defense is utilizing Project Maven, an AI-assisted targeting and battlefield management system, to drive military strikes against Iran. Launched in 2017 as a drone-footage analysis tool, the program now accelerates the kill chain by fusing sensor data, satellite imagery, and troop intelligence to identify targets. During the first 24 hours of Operation Epic Fury, U.S. forces struck over 1,000 targets.

Iran reports that one such attack, targeting a former military complex used as a school, killed 168 children. Palantir currently serves as the primary technology contractor providing the program's operational backbone.

The Pentagon is now seeking to replace Anthropic's Claude AI model, which provided natural language interaction for the system. This move follows a dispute over Anthropic's restrictions against the tracking of U.S. citizens and the use of its technology for fully automated strikes. The Department of Defense is reportedly considering Google, xAI, and OpenAI as replacements. Google was the original AI contractor for Project Maven but withdrew in 2018 following employee protests over the use of AI in weapons systems.
