Moderate Conservatives Defect to Liberal Democrats Over Rightward Shift

Former Conservative Party officials and activists, including Cody Butler and Josh Bancroft, have defected to the Liberal Democrats to establish a new group called the One Nation Liberals. The defectors claim that moderates, centrists, and supporters of net zero targets are no longer welcome within the Conservative Party due to a rightward shift under leader Kemi Badenoch.

Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, welcomed the defectors during the party's annual conference in Brighton. Davey criticized Badenoch for purging members and MPs who support climate action, positioning his party as the primary home for displaced moderates. He stated that there is "no ceiling" to the party's ambitions as it seeks to expand its influence within the current five-party system.

While welcoming the new members, Davey ruled out any future pact with the Conservatives. The move highlights a growing divide within the center-right, as former officials like Bancroft argue that the Conservative Party has moved too far to the right, leaving millions of voters behind.
