Blake Burgau, owner of Maine Buddies, increased hiking service rates from $45 to $50 per dog to offset the costs. In the food service sector, Portland House of Pizza increased the driver's share of delivery fees from $1.99 to $3.00, while Leonardo’s Pizza shifted to quarterly mileage reimbursement evaluations to manage price volatility.
Gig workers for Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash report significant profit losses. Ride-share drivers have become more selective about accepting trips to avoid unprofitable long-distance returns. While Uber Technologies Inc. has previously used fuel surcharges to assist drivers during price spikes, current volatility continues to strain the earnings of local delivery and transport workers.
