Coupang Reports $570 Million Loss After Record Data Breach Fine
Coupang Inc. reported a second-quarter net loss of approximately $570 million driven by a record fine for a massive customer data breach.
Coupang Inc. reported a second-quarter net loss between 856 billion and 865 billion won, or roughly $570 million, marking a sharp decline from a 43.5 billion won profit in the previous year. The loss was primarily caused by a record 624.7 billion won fine imposed in June by the Personal Information Protection Commission.
The penalty followed a November 2025 data breach that affected more than 37 million customers and involved the unauthorized collection of online activity. Despite this financial hit, the company saw total revenue grow 4 percent year-over-year to 13.3 trillion won.
Growth was concentrated in the Developing Offerings segment, which includes Taiwan operations and food delivery, rising 20 percent to $1.43 billion. As part of a larger $1 billion buyback program, the company repurchased $459 million in shares during the quarter.
