LexisNexis CEO Warns Lawyers Risk Licenses Using Open-Source AI

CEO of LexisNexis North America, UK & Ireland Sean Fitzpatrick warns that attorneys face an increasing risk of losing their professional licenses due to errors caused by the misuse of open-source artificial intelligence tools. Courts have already sanctioned lawyers for using large language models such as ChatGPT and Claude to generate fabricated court decisions, improper citations, and imaginary cases.

Fitzpatrick and other legal experts highlight that open-source models can lead to breaches of attorney-client privilege if sensitive data is uploaded to these systems. To mitigate these hallucinations and privacy risks, Fitzpatrick promotes Lexis+ AI, a closed proprietary system designed specifically for legal work.

Legal AI expert Frank Emmert argues that the industry requires accelerated education to ensure lawyers and judges master the use of these tools without compromising legal standards. Meanwhile, researcher Damien Charlotin continues to maintain a database that tracks instances of AI hallucinations within legal documents.
