Maharashtra Launches Crackdown on Drivers Lacking Marathi Knowledge

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik initiated a statewide drive to penalize taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers who cannot speak Marathi, threatening license cancellations for non-compliance.

Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik launched a statewide enforcement drive on August 20, 2026, targeting taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers who lack a working knowledge of the Marathi language. The initiative follows an announcement on August 19 that non-compliant drivers would face penalties, including the suspension or total cancellation of their driving licenses.

Regional Transport Offices began inspections immediately, with flying squads in Mumbai checking 1,430 drivers at major hubs such as Bandra, Goregaon, Kurla, Dadar, Borivali, and Wadala. Authorities issued show-cause notices to 422 drivers who failed the assessment. Those found lacking proficiency have one month to acquire the necessary language skills; failure to do so may result in badge suspensions for up to three months or the eventual cancellation of permits.

Sarnaik stated that the objective of the rule was not to take away livelihoods but to protect Marathi and preserve the identity and culture of Maharashtra. While approximately 1.65 lakh drivers reportedly completed a 105-day training campaign, many have reported long queues and administrative delays at government offices while trying to collect certificates. Transport unions have threatened protests if the enforcement leads to financial losses or driver exploitation.
