Delhi Government Approves Free Solar Systems for 230,000 Households

The Government of Delhi approved the second amendment to the Delhi Solar Energy Policy on September 1, 2026, to accelerate rooftop solar adoption. The revised policy aims to install solar systems in 230,000 households by March 2027 and increase total solar generation to 500 MW by the end of the current financial year.

Residential consumers with an average monthly electricity consumption of up to 400 units are now eligible for a 3-kW system at zero upfront cost. This is funded through a combined subsidy of ₹78,000 from the central government's PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and ₹78,000 from the Delhi government, with the state providing an additional top-up of approximately ₹19,000 to cover remaining costs. The government also removed application charges for domestic systems up to 10 kW.

To address previous slow progress, the policy shifts from recurring incentives to upfront financial support. Installations now include a five-year mandatory operation and maintenance guarantee provided by vendors. Beneficiaries will retain existing electricity subsidies and can sell surplus power back to the grid via net metering. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated the initiative is part of a broader vision to transform consumers into power generators.
