Abdul El-Sayed Holds Double-Digit Lead in Michigan Senate Primary

Progressive candidate and former public health official Abdul El-Sayed holds a significant lead over U.S. Representative Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary for a Michigan Senate seat. An Emerson College Polling survey released July 30 shows El-Sayed with 54% support compared to 39% for Stevens. The divide is primarily generational, with El-Sayed dominating among voters under 50 and Stevens leading among those 60 and older.

El-Sayed, who is backed by Senator Bernie Sanders, runs on a platform calling for the abolishment of ICE and the restructuring of the Supreme Court. Representative Stevens positions herself as a pragmatic alternative, arguing she is better equipped to defeat the presumptive Republican nominee, former Representative Mike Rogers. The race was further narrowed after State Senator Mallory McMorrow suspended her campaign over the Independence Day holiday weekend.

While El-Sayed leads the primary, general election data from the Glengariff Group suggests different dynamics. The polling indicates Mike Rogers, who is endorsed by Donald Trump, would perform better against El-Sayed than Stevens, though Rogers maintains a 10-point lead in a head-to-head matchup and strong support among independent voters. The primary outcome on August 4 will influence Democratic efforts to retake the Senate majority.
