Stripe Acquires AI Startup OpenRouter for Over $7 Billion

Stripe Inc. finalized an agreement to acquire OpenRouter Inc., a New York-based startup, for more than $7 billion. The deal aims to strengthen Stripe's position in the AI sector as developers seek infrastructure to build agentic capabilities across various providers and data sources.

OpenRouter provides access to over 400 AI models, allowing its 8 million developers to switch between models to find cost-effective solutions. The acquisition follows a period of rapid growth for the startup, which recently raised over $150 million in capital from investors including CapitalG, Andreessen Horowitz, and Menlo Ventures.

While the Wall Street Journal previously reported a potential deal value of $10 billion, current sources indicate the final price exceeds $7 billion.
