DOJ Deploys Election Monitors to Iowa Polling Locations

Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate confirmed the deployment of U.S. Department of Justice monitors to observe the November 3 general election.

Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate confirmed that the U.S. Department of Justice will deploy plainclothes election monitors to various polling locations for the general election on November 3, 2026. The deployment is part of a nationwide initiative announced by DOJ spokesperson Kiersten Pels to send 1,000 monitors across all 50 states to observe civil rights, disability issues, and the handling of provisional ballots.

Speaking from the State Emergency Operations Center in Johnston, Pate stated that the monitors will act strictly as observers and will have no direct contact with election workers or influence over the voting process. He argued that the presence of federal monitors ensures ballots are counted fairly and accurately, while warning that political criticism of the process could disenfranchise voters by creating a perception of government interference.

Democratic candidate for Secretary of State Ryan Peterman criticized the move, citing a lack of transparency regarding the specific locations where monitors will be stationed. Peterman questioned the motives of the current DOJ leadership and expressed concern that observers might interfere with election workers and voters.
