In an interview with The New York Times, the congresswoman stated she will make her final decision following the 2026 midterm elections.

Ocasio-Cortez described the current environment as a unique political window, though she acknowledged the risks associated with a presidential bid. She noted that such a campaign would be an all-or-nothing move, as a loss would end her time in public office. Her deliberations include personal considerations regarding her age, fertility goals, and the historical challenges of being a Latina woman in a country that has never elected a female president.

While considering a White House run, Ocasio-Cortez refused to rule out a primary challenge against Schumer. She stated that her future decisions would be personal and not based on deference. Recent Data for Progress polling indicates she holds 55% support among likely Democratic voters, compared to 36% for Schumer. To support these potential ambitions, she has built a significant financial profile, reporting over $32 million in receipts between January 2025 and June 2026.
