Lithuania Fortifies Gizai Substation Against Russian Hybrid Threats

The Government of Lithuania is implementing advanced security fortifications at the Gizai substation, a critical node of the Harmony Link interconnection that links Baltic power grids to Poland and the European Union. Located 30 kilometers west of the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, the site is being hardened against hybrid threats, including Shahed drones and explosives-laden vehicles.

Defensive measures include reinforced concrete sarcophagi for transformers, specialized fencing, and tunnel-detection sensors. These upgrades follow intelligence warnings regarding potential Russian false flag operations and recent sabotage targeting Germany's electricity grid. Litgrid CEO Andrius Semeskevicius stated that the facility is being designed for a new reality where the grid must be protected from multiple drones carrying 100 kilograms of explosives.

These security enhancements will increase project costs by at least €48 million. Lithuania and Poland are requesting that the European Union cover a significant portion of these expenses, arguing that the security of the energy system is a collective European responsibility. Lithuanian Energy Minister Lukas Savickas maintained that these costs should not fall solely on Lithuania, while Poland's Wojciech Wrochna urged European partners to change their mindset regarding energy system security.
