Labour Party Restores Whip to Diane Abbott and Joani Reid

The Labour Party restored the party whip to MPs Diane Abbott and Joani Reid on July 30 and 31, 2026, ending two separate disciplinary suspensions. The party stated that both readmissions followed internal processes approved by its independent review board and were not linked to Andy Burnham becoming party leader.

Diane Abbott, the longest-serving female lawmaker in Britain, was reinstated after a year-long suspension that began in July 2025. The suspension followed a dispute over her claims that racism based on skin color differs from the prejudice experienced by Jewish people, as well as a social media post referring to the Israel Defence Force as the "Jewish Defence Force." Abbott apologized for conflating the state of Israel with the Jewish community and affirmed her commitment to opposing all forms of racism. Her return coincided with the conclusion of an investigation by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission.

Joani Reid was readmitted following a voluntary suspension that began in March 2026. This suspension was triggered by the arrest of her husband, David Taylor, on suspicion of spying for China. Reid maintained she was never a suspect or witness in a police investigation and was not involved in her husband's business activities.

Reactions to the reinstatements were mixed. First Secretary of State Louise Haigh welcomed the decision and Abbott's apology. However, Phil Rosenberg, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, expressed concern over Abbott's return, suggesting the situation mirrored past failures regarding the Jewish community.
