New South Wales Approves $10 Billion AI Data Center Expansion
The Government of New South Wales approved over $10 billion in AI data center projects, sparking economic growth and debates over environmental costs and corporate tax avoidance.
Australia is undergoing a massive expansion of AI data center infrastructure, with 162 facilities currently operational. The Government of New South Wales recently approved more than $10 billion in projects, including a $3.1 billion facility at Marsden Park, which is the largest in the southern hemisphere.
Belinda Dennett, CEO of Data Centres Australia, emphasizes that the boom is driving significant economic growth through the creation of construction, technical, and operational jobs. However, the rapid proliferation has drawn criticism from local leaders and policymakers. Rochelle Flood, Deputy Mayor of Lane Cove Council, has raised alarms regarding air quality and the strain on the energy grid.
Independent Senator David Pocock has specifically targeted multinational hyperscalers, arguing that these companies avoid paying sufficient taxes in Australia. He advocates for stricter guarantees regarding water and energy usage to ensure the public does not bear the environmental cost of this infrastructure. Meanwhile, in the financial sector, AI data center company IREN has faced market volatility, with its shares hitting their lowest close since April after an eight-day decline.
