Republicans Pass Tax Bill Raising SALT Deduction Cap
The Republican Party passed tax legislation raising the state and local tax deduction cap to $40,000 while cutting food stamps and Medicaid funding.
The Republican Party passed new tax legislation that increases the deduction cap for state and local taxes (SALT) from $10,000 to $40,000. The provision is temporary and set to expire in 2030. The $40,000 cap begins to phase down for individuals earning over $500,000, returning to the original $10,000 limit for those earning $600,000 or more.
Analysis from the Tax Foundation indicates the bottom 80% of earners will see no benefit from the change. The increase primarily benefits wealthy taxpayers in high-tax states, including California, New York, Illinois, and New Jersey. The legislation is projected to add over $3 trillion to the national debt, with the SALT cap increase alone contributing $180 billion over the next decade.
To offset these tax breaks, the bill cuts funding for Medicaid and food stamps. The passage of the bill followed internal party conflict, as representatives from lower-tax states criticized the measure as a giveaway to the wealthy, while representatives from high-tax states pushed for the increase.
