Foreign US Treasury Holdings Rise to $9.33 Trillion

Foreign holdings of US Treasuries increased by $83 billion in August, led by growth in the UK, Canada, and Belgium.

Foreign holdings of US Treasuries rose by more than $83 billion in August to a total of $9.33 trillion. The United States Department of the Treasury reported that this increase represents a recovery from the lowest levels seen since October 2025.

Growth was primarily driven by the United Kingdom, where holdings surpassed $1 trillion for the first time, alongside increases from Canada and Belgium. The Treasury Department noted that these figures incorporate valuation changes as well as net sales and purchases.

In contrast, holdings from Japan and mainland China declined significantly. Japan, the largest foreign holder, saw its holdings drop by $36 billion to $1.1 trillion, the lowest level since December 2024. This decrease occurred as Japanese officials intervened in foreign-exchange markets to support the yen. Mainland China's holdings fell by $27 billion to $591 billion, marking an 18-year low.
