Massachusetts and Boston Declare August 15 as India Day

Maura Healey, the Governor of Massachusetts, and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu issued proclamations on August 1 declaring August 15 as India Day. The designation coincides with the 79th anniversary of India's independence from British colonial rule in 1947.

The proclamations recognize the contributions of the Indian diaspora to the social, economic, and civic health of the state and city, specifically within the fields of medicine, science, technology, education, business, and public service. Governor Healey's proclamation noted that India possesses the world's largest diaspora, with over 36 million people of Indian origin living abroad, including more than five million in the United States.

Lieutenant Governor Kimberley Driscoll and Secretary of the Commonwealth William Francis Galvin endorsed the measure, urging residents to celebrate the occasion. In Boston, Mayor Wu additionally welcomed the opening of a new Indian Consulate and noted the visit of the INS Sudarshini during the SAILBOSTON-250 event.
