FAA Awards $875 Million Contract to Modernize US Airspace

The Federal Aviation Administration awarded an $875 million contract to Air Space Intelligence to develop the Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes, and Trajectories (SMART) system. This initiative, part of a Trump administration push to overhaul air traffic control, utilizes artificial intelligence and predictive analytics to mitigate bottlenecks and congestion across United States airspace.

The SMART system scales a technology known as Flyways AI, which Alaska Airlines has utilized since 2021. According to the airline, the tool has saved tens of thousands of flight hours and one million gallons of fuel annually by optimizing flight routes. FAA head Bryan Bedford described the existing system as "woefully unorganized," noting that current facilities lack the ability to view the national airspace picture in a unified way.

While the FAA emphasizes that the technology is a decision-making aid intended to assist rather than replace human air traffic controllers, the transition requires a significant shift in operator behavior. Some skeptics have questioned whether a tool designed for individual airline dispatching can successfully scale to manage the complexity of the entire national airspace.
