Chris Bowen Urges Data Centers to Stabilize Energy Grid

Energy and Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen stated that Australia's status as a premier global destination for data center investment demonstrates confidence in the national energy system. Speaking at a Nature Conservation Council business breakfast, Bowen argued that AI infrastructure, which consumes significant energy and water, should be constructed with extra capacity and redundancy. This design would allow data centers to function as flexible shock absorbers for the grid to prevent outages.

Bowen highlighted a 1.9 percent reduction in domestic greenhouse gas emissions for the year ending September 2025, citing the growth of renewables and electric vehicle adoption as primary drivers. However, Gavan McFadzean of the Australian Conservation Foundation challenged the government's optimism. McFadzean warned that the current pace of emissions reductions is only half of what is required to meet 2030 targets and represents just 35-40 percent of the annual pace needed to reach 2035 targets.
