TPLF Condemns Ethiopian Government Drone Strikes in Merewa

The Tigray People's Liberation Front denounced Ethiopian government drone strikes in southern Tigray that targeted troops and allegedly hit a school.

The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) condemned drone strikes conducted by the Ethiopian government on Monday in Merewa, located in southern Tigray near the Amhara region border. TPLF official Amanuel Assefa reported that the strikes targeted Tigrayan troops and caused human casualties, further alleging that a school was hit during the operation.

These attacks occur as federal and Tigrayan forces maintain positions along the border of the northernmost regional state. The TPLF also reported separate clashes between federal forces and its troops in northwestern Tigray near the Sudan border on August 1.

The Ethiopian federal army has not responded to requests for comment. The region remains unstable as several key provisions of the November 2022 peace agreement, including the disarmament of the TPLF and the return of displaced persons, have not been implemented.
