Asian Markets Waver Amid AI Gains and Middle East Tensions
Asian stock markets fluctuated on October 22 as strong AI earnings clashed with reports of planned U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.
Asian stock markets experienced volatility on October 22, balancing positive technology earnings against escalating geopolitical instability in the Middle East. The Nikkei Stock Average initially rose 0.3% to 64,828.16, driven by gains from Wall Street and strong performance from AI-related firms such as BayCurrent and Nomura Research Institute. This trend was supported by SpaceX reporting its first profit as a public company, while Super Micro Computer Corp and Meta Platforms Incorporated exceeded revenue expectations.
However, broader Asian markets declined as investors weighed these gains against significant geopolitical risks. The Federal government of the United States ordered diplomats to evacuate Saudi Arabia following Houthi strikes and reportedly coordinated with Israel to develop attack plans against Iran, scheduled for after the November 3 U.S. midterm elections. Additionally, Meta's plan to issue non-voting Class C common stock sparked concerns regarding the sustainability of AI spending.
Currency and monetary policy also added to the market tension. The Bank of Japan signaled a readiness to increase borrowing costs through Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino, while the Bank of Korea maintained its benchmark interest rate at 3.00 percent. The Japanese yen traded at 158.18 against the U.S. dollar during the session.
