US Restaurant Chains Shrink Portions for GLP-1 Users
Major American restaurant chains are introducing smaller portions and high-protein menus as GLP-1 weight-loss medication usage rises among U.S. adults.
Major American restaurant chains are restructuring their menus and reducing portion sizes to accommodate the growing number of consumers using GLP-1 weight-loss medications. Gallup data shows that 11% of U.S. adults now use these medications, an increase from 3% in 2024. This shift in consumption has led to a decline in dining frequency; a William Blair survey found that GLP-1 users' monthly restaurant visits dropped from 9.8 to 4.9, with fast-food outlets experiencing the steepest decline.
Olive Garden launched a nationwide Lighter Portions menu in January to address these changing habits. Other casual dining brands have followed suit, with P.F. Chang's introducing medium portions and half-portion appetizers in fall 2025, and The Cheesecake Factory debuting a Bites and Bowls menu featuring smaller dishes.
Quick-service and beverage chains are also adapting through protein-focused offerings. Chipotle Mexican Grill introduced a High Protein Menu in December 2025, while Shake Shack launched a Good Fit menu that includes lettuce wrap swaps. Additionally, Smoothie King developed high-protein, no-added-sugar drinks specifically designed for people taking GLP-1 medications. Industry experts expect a broader sector-wide demand for smaller, vegetable-heavy, and protein-rich meal options.
